We got our hands on an early build of the Grizzle-E Smart and tested it for a few weeks before putting together our full charging review. The Grizzle-E Smart is a 40-amp WiFi-connected smart charger from United Chargers and available to purchase now for $539.00.
We found the Grizzle-E Smart to be a great value, as you can pay hundreds more for a similarly equipped smart charger, and still not get the Grizzle-E’s stiffness, or more importantly That the ability to connect with any OCPP-compliant EV Charging Station software.
Why OCPP matters
OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is an open-source communication protocol for networked electric vehicle charging stations and can be used for both residential or commercial applications. OCPP was created to allow any electric vehicle charging station to communicate seamlessly with any EV charging station management software.
Much like the way smart chargers work today, the same company that sells charging stations also developed an app that you connect the charging station to and use to control it. However, what happens if you really like a particular charging station but hate the app that comes with it, or visa-versa? Basically, you are stuck with the app that the charging station manufacturer provides.

There are few charging stations today that are OCPP compliant, but they must be provisioned with server details during firmware load. The Grizzle-E is the first EVSE with OCPP to “soft provision,” which means you enter OCPP server details during charger set up.
You can then reset the station and change the server to use another company’s software. You are never tied to a single app; You can try as many as you want until you find the one that suits you best. It allows the customer to choose the app that provides the features they find most useful.
This also means that the Grizzle-e Smart is not only suitable for residential use but is capable of becoming a commercial charging station that collects payments with a QR code. It can be applied in multi-family dwellings such as apartment buildings and condominium complexes. It will also work perfectly for charging at workplace and strictly commercial use such as public parking garages and shopping center parking lots.
Grizzle-E Smart App
United Chargers is developing its own app for the Grizzle-E Smart, and it’s currently available from the Google Play store. However, it is not fully functional yet, as it was launched just a few weeks back. The Grizzle-e can also connect to Smart AmpUp or ChargeLab software, and United Chargers is working to enable Grizzle-e Smart connectivity to several of the more than 400 EV charging station software providers.
Not just smart, it’s tough and full of features
The Grizzle-E Smart retains all of the great qualities that made the Grizzle-E Classic one of the most popular EV charging stations available today, and our for the best non-smart charging station in the InsideEV 2020 Charging Station Buyer’s Guide like.
