The Pinkbike Podcast: Episode 80 – The Best Vehicles for Mountain Bikers

Wait, isn’t this a mountain bike website? The thing is, there are many riders out there who end up with a specific truck, van or car because it suits their riding lifestyle. And who among us hasn’t bounced in the back of a ratty shuttle truck, slept in our wagon halfway through, or had aspirations of owning a drool-worthy van conversion? The point is, while we all love biking, sometimes our vehicles go along with our sport.

In today’s podcast Alicia Leggett, Mike Kazimer, James Smarthwaite, and I talk about vehicles that matter to mountain bikers, vehicles that make no sense but we want anyway, trucks versus vans. , tips for good van living, and what kind of bike racks matter most.

Alicia and Kazimer both own an AWD Astro van (AKA the Safari) and have been put to good use. Alicia (left) holds her for a few years, while Kazimer (right) drives her well under the posted speed limit. And maybe in a passing street.

Trevor May of Trailforks is more of a trucker, and something tells me he likes red. I’ve owned my Mitsubishi L300 Delica for eleven years and moved it (very slowly) south to Utah every winter.

Which vehicles work best for us? Like mountain bikes, it depends on what you need to do. Trucks are the obvious choice for many people, but some (including me) would argue that vans make even more sense… especially if it has six wheels and a Pingegauer. Then again, the sight of a motorcycle with a mountain bike puts a smile on everyone’s face, so maybe that’s the answer? As for me, I’d happily sell what’s left of my soul for a classy Mercedes Benz 300 TD wagon that I’d walk the long way to the trailhead with some 11 year olds.

What is your dream vehicle for mountain bikers? Did you buy your current vehicle because it works well for the ride? Next week is (probably) our big Q&A episode, so jot those questions down and we might as well answer them on next week’s show.
