Plano, Texas, September 14, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — The all-new 2022 GR 86 will be arriving at Toyota dealerships soon, but race fans needn’t wait. They can see it in action this weekend as it speeds up the National Auto Sport Association National Championship. The role of the speed car begins its Thursday, September 16Racers are led at Daytona International Speedway in the form of Toyota’s latest Gazoo Racing sports coupe. When is the winner-take-all championship race? Sunday, September 19.

“We are thrilled to have the new GR86 selected as the official speed car of NASA’s national championship,” said Michael Trippo, Toyota Vice President of Vehicle Marketing and Communications. “This car is absolutely at home on the road, and it will be great to see it take all the classes on the track.”

Sporting custom Red, White and Black graphics, the new GR86 will proudly lead 25+ classes across the country and nearly 400 competitors each in the prestigious National Championship event. The championship race will take place on the 3.81-mile road racing circuit, made famous by the 24 Hours of Daytona.

The NASA Championships will begin with two qualifying races, where competitors earn points based on their final position of both races. Those points set the grid (and stage) for Sunday’s final. Specific classes require competitors to drive nearly identical cars with a specific tyre, while more modified classes will see different vehicles fight head-to-head over whichever tire they choose.

Toyota and NASA partnered for the first time in 2019 to offer all GR Supra owners a one-year NASA membership as well as a free day of instruction on a track. The program expanded earlier this year to include all GR sports cars, such as the GR 86, so owners can learn precise driving skills from expert trainers in a track environment.

“It is truly an honor that Toyota has stepped up with the GR86 as the speed car of our marquee championship event,” said Jeremy Croisette, Vice President of NASA. “I can’t think of a more ideal car for this, and I know a ton of our competitors will be looking at it for their next road or track car!”
