Police found blood in the house, roommate’s car

According to a newly released arrest report, police officers began to suspect foul play was involved in the Pensacola woman’s disappearance when they found blood splatters inside her home and in three places in the trunk of her roommate’s car.

Latonia Baxter, 40, went missing on September 10, and her daughter, 21-year-old Jaane Jackson, reported her missing to police on September 12.

Five days after Baxter went missing, his roommate, Giles Kurt Jones, 38, was arrested for his death. He has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder and was booked into Escambia County Jail without bond.

Search teams dispersed to an empty lot near the corner of Old Palafox Street and Airport Boulevard as the search for Latonia Baxter's body continues on Thursday.

Baxter’s body had not been recovered as of Friday and search efforts were still underway. PPD spokesman Mike Wood told the News Journal that investigators had reason to suspect that Jones may have hidden Baxter’s body in a “wooded area.”

According to Jones’ arrest report, police began investigating him as a possible murder suspect two days before his arrest.

On Monday, PPD officers inspected the home on Warwick Avenue where Baxter, Jackson and Jones were all rented rooms. The report said that no one else had access to the house.

While at home, an officer noticed blood splatters in Baxter’s bedroom.

“On further investigation, I found tire tracks from the rear door and blood stains on the back door,” the officer wrote in the report. “The blood was located in an attached shed/storage room at the back of the house.”

Police interviewed Jones, but his statements have been modified from the report.

Later, investigators searched Jones’ vehicle and, according to the report, used crime scene techniques to locate a “large amount of blood” in the car’s trunk.

The report said further investigation revealed that a license plate reader at the intersection of US 29 and State Road 4 took pictures of Jones’ car in Century at around 3 p.m. Saturday and the car passed through the area back around 3 p.m. .

Investigators also obtained a cellphone of Jones and discovered a photo on the phone, taken at 1:54 p.m. on September 11, that showed Baxter dead “with obvious signs of trauma,” according to police. Investigators noticed a mermaid tattoo on the wrist that matched the tattoo seen on Baxter’s wrist in family photos.
