Polestar 3 EV SUV Powertrain, Design Details Revealed by CEO

  • Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath revealed some more details about the upcoming Polestar 3 SUV.
  • It will be a two-row crossover with sloping roof, and will be offered in single and dual-motor configurations.
  • 3 will be built in the US and is set to arrive in 2022.

The creation of Polestar as a standalone brand in 2017 was well ahead of any product, but the Volvo EV subsidiary is now trying to catch up with an aggressive schedule that aims to introduce a new model every year. So after the Polestar 1 PHEV coupe and the Polestar 2 EV crossover, we will see the Polestar 3 next year.

While Polestar has released only a few details of the upcoming electric SUV, and a teaser image of it at the bottom of a sheet, we’ve been able to add a few more details after chatting with the company’s CEO Thomas Ingenlath at last week’s Munich Auto Show.

At first, not a big surprise considering the apparently low ceiling in the official photo, Ingenlath confirmed that the Polestar 3 will only have two rows of seats.

“I have nothing against three rows per se,” he said, “but the second we did it you guys might be asking what the difference was to the XC90 . . . having two rows gave the car that aerodynamic roofline opportunity It gives a chance to emphasize the space between the first and second lines, which really gives the second line a great feel.”

The Polestar 3 will be made in the US at the South Carolina plant that is manufacturing the Volvo S60 and will also manufacture the next-generation XC90. Ingenlath promises that the new car will be offered with a powertrain that is “a peak power position that is unique to the Polestar,” and therefore goes well beyond the EV versions of the XC90. But he also confirmed in Munich that, like the Polestar 2, the plan is to offer both single-motor and dual-motor versions.

“I definitely see it as a good combination,” he said, “at the end of the day the twin motor has a little more power and acceleration, but there are a lot of people who don’t need that thrill. And There are a lot of people who don’t need all-wheel drive. So in Norway or Austria we will always sell more all-wheel drive. But many people in China or America are happy with a single motor.”

Beyond the 3, Polestar is committed to building a production version of its stylish Precept concept. Despite the stoppage shift towards SUVs, Ingenlath says the decision to move to low-roof sedans is the right one.

“I really believe in a world where not everyone is happy with one dish,” he said, “it would be too boring. Most restaurants try to cater to different tastes, and having a brand that includes Will be SUV only, will be terrible for me.”

Predicting the Polestar 2 to be the biggest seller globally, Ingenlath said the Polestar 3 should help take the brand’s total production to over 100,000 cars. Which won’t scare Tesla, but which — if given in the short term — will make it one of the more successful pure EV brands.

One thing the Polestar isn’t doing is returning to top-flight racing, despite the brand’s original running touring cars for Volvo.

“We have so many things to focus on, I don’t think our customers will understand if we get into that,” Ingenlath said. However, he suggested that lower level cooperation could still take place.

We’ll let you know more about the Polestar 3 as soon as we receive it, and before it goes on sale late next year.
