Wheatland, Mohd. – Wesley Smith led all the way, but was halted during a two-lap shootout during Night Two of the 11th Annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel’s Lucas Oil Porry War Sprint Car Feature win. McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway.
It was a dramatic ending after Smith’s car lost fluid and second-placed Cody Baker flipped his car as he followed with two laps remaining.
“It’s a really cool way to kick things off last night,” Smith said. “We may have to come back tomorrow with a new engine, but hopefully this is a prelude to what’s to come.”
Smith registered his fifth WAR Series win of the season.
Smith started outside row one and set the pace, with Baker finishing second on lap two with Jack Wagner in third as a caution was taken on lap three. Smith opened a gap of two seconds over Baker from lap 10, and Javier Doni moved to third.
Baker, starting fifth, slowly began to cut the margin, with 10 to go within a second of the leader and half a second with five circuits remaining.
As the two came to the start-finish line to complete lap 23, a plume of smoke emanated from Smith’s car and Baker, about two lengths behind, took turns after going into the fluid from Smith’s engine. flipped.
“He went in and I don’t know if he blew the motor or what, and put some oil on,” Baker said. “I skated straight into the wall. Our run was going well.”
The sequence saw Donnie in second place and Jack Wagner in third and Just Zimmerman in fourth, as two green-flag laps remained.
With questions about Smith hanging on when his motor restarted, he finally answered them, beating Donny by 1.4 seconds.
Wagner finished third, Zimmermann in fourth, and championship points leader Marion Klauser finished fifth after finishing 20th.
“It’s a good question. I still don’t know,” Smith said of what happened to his motor. “I know the engine got really hot. It’s a testament to the team that’s behind me and the car we’ve brought to this race. “
