California woman and dog fall from tree while crawling from car – East Bay Times

A woman and her dog crawled out of a palanquin that had broken off a huge tree, which had fallen by the side of a residential road in Ghati village, and was taken to a hospital on Sunday, 12 September.

Los Angeles Police Lieutenant Dan Widman said the motorist was driving along Huston Street near Beck Avenue around 11:40 a.m. when the tree apparently broke near the base of its trunk. When she was passing by, she fell directly on top of his vehicle.

“I was doing the dishes, and saw the whole thing from my kitchen bay window,” said nearby resident Sherry Ingraham. “It just broke and fell. It happened so fast.”

Sherry Ingraham’s husband, Bradley Ingraham, was among six to eight people who went outside to check on the driver. He said the motorist remained unresponsive for several minutes. But the woman eventually came, and got out of the car with the help of the Good Samaritans.

The tree appeared to have fallen on the front seats of a gray Chevrolet Equinox with a thatched roof, photos from the scene showed. It was about 30 feet long, and completely blocked Huston Street as it laid over the car, Ingraham said.

“It’s a miracle he wasn’t killed,” Bradley Ingraham said. “If things had been a little different, it could have been fatal.”

The tree also fell on two vehicles parked on the road. Sherry and Bradley Ingraham said this could slightly reduce its fall and prevent it from completely leveling the sedan and its occupants.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said the driver had “traumatic injuries.” Widman said he was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and is expected to recover.

“His dog and everyone in front of him were covered in blood,” said Sherry Ingraham, when she helped him get out of there.

Sherry Ingraham said the dog was a Chihuahua who had not suffered serious injuries during the test. It was left in the care of a couple who live by a fallen tree across the street, a medical professional at Cedars-Sinai.

Widman said the car did not hit the tree and it was not immediately clear why it fell. It remained in the street till 2:30 pm, but workers were working to remove it on Sunday afternoon.

Sherry and Bradley Ingraham said the tree is one of many in the area that has been leaning precariously across the street for nearly 30 years. Its roots had distorted the pavement around it, and a falling branch had damaged one of Ingraham’s cars several years earlier.

Bradley Ingraham said, “Everyone who lives here is always worried about one of these things coming down and hitting them.”
