Popular camper van maker Advance RV has transformed its 170-inch Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cab into a tiny house inside a box on wheels dubbed “Asteroid of the Asteroid”.

But unlike most Sprinter camper vans currently available on the market, the Asteroid of Happiness was not built inside a Sprinter body.

Instead, it is based on the advanced RV’s “B Box” platform, which was unveiled last year. This “box” completely replaces the sprinter body.

“When we searched for a box that would allow us to meet our customers’ objectives on a cab chassis, we built a prototype because we were aware of the spatial, insulation and off-grid advancements that a box could provide. Will do,” Mike Niendorfer, Advance RV’s president, told Insider at the time of release.

According to the team, using an in-house built “box” instead of the curved walls typical of a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van creates more interior space.

Plus it is well insulated, allowing the camper van to operate in all four seasons.

Upgraded RV didn’t provide an exact price for this build, but Neudorfer noted in an email interview with Insider that the last three B Box vans cost between about $425,000 and $490,000.

And looking ahead, the company already has plans for 13 more custom B Box vans, a testament to the success of its in-house manufacturing.

At the same time, there has been an increase in the sales of Advanced RV.

This increase in business and popularity has been common for RV and camper van manufacturers throughout COVID-19.

But Neundorfer believes that the success of the upgraded RV is potentially only “somewhat affected” by the rise of road travel during the COVID pandemic.

“Most of our customers have been in contact with us over the years, so we conclude that our growth is a result of our capabilities and reputation and not so much a reaction to market trends,” he said.

According to Vans’ YouTube video tour, Vans was created for a client named Willie, a designer and artist who travels with his family. He also helped design the van.

Advance RV began discussing the Asteroid of Happiness with this client a year ago, and the van took more than six months to build.

“To generate ideas like these, you’re pulling together a lot of other influences… [like] Your experience in an old RV and how it can be enhanced or improved,” Wiley said in the YouTube video.

Overall, the tiny house on wheels stands at 24.5 feet tall with a height of about 6.7 feet.

The Asteroid of Happiness makes up to four people sit and sleep, which is a “challenge” [to do both] … in a small, nimble vehicle,” according to Neudorfer.

According to Neundorfer, the company has received deposits from other customers who are interested in certain design aspects of the asteroid.
